Growing
up in Owensboro, Kentucky, Alan Johnson has been around racing his entire life.
His father sponsored many cars in the area (including Dean Howard's
father's car), and then Alan drove a late model owned by his dad from 1981 to
1985. During this time he had the
opportunity to race against now NASCAR stars Jeff, David, and Mark Green at the
local asphalt oval in Owensboro.
Alan's
sim racing career began in 1990 with a Papyrus sim called Indy Car Racing.
Then when NASCAR 1 came out in 1992, he got his first Thrustmaster wheel
and was hooked from that point on. "I
love to play golf and fish now, but most of all I love to online race, "
say Alan. "I started racing
radio-controlled cars regionally in ROAR oval events pretty heavily, and man was
that getting expensive! I did that
for about 5 yrs. till about 1994, but a little Papy sim called Indy Car Racing
hooked me on sim racing in 1990, and I've been dedicated to sim racing ever
since."
Alan's
dedication to sim racing lead him to compete in Hawaii during the infancy of
online racing. "I
spent a lot of money for long distance phone bills to race back then."
Then when TEN came out and "big time" online racing got going, Alan
put away the RC equipment and was severely hooking on online racing for good. Since then he has raced in several leagues including Hard
Core, NetRacing, OSCAR, Flashpoint, MORS, MORL, SASCAR, Christian Racing, ORCA,
and now the RacersOnline Cup Series. "My
wife was going to shoot me when it got to where I was running in 5 leagues, so I
scaled back to four," laughs Alan.
Alan
joined the prestigious Microspeed Motorsports race team almost 3 years ago. "It
has improved me as a driver and a person, and I've made lifelong friendships.
I believe we have one of the best teams on the Net bar none."
Alan
finished 8th in the inaugural ROL Cup Series season, then 15th in 2003 after
missing many races due to an injury. However, he did manage to pick up his
first Cup win at the season finale' at Milwaukee.
"I
really enjoy racing with the guys in RacersOnline.com Cup Series, several which
I have raced with for years. I feel it a privilege to run in the ROL Cup
Series, and I think it will have a great future."
